Goodreads synopsis:
Why play nice when you can be naughty?

Jessica Bauer is aces when it comes to security, but the PR side? Not so much. Now she has a chance to take over Knight Securities―if she plays nice with the next client. Unfortunately, that client happens to be Declan McCabe. And it's too bad someone wants him dead, because after he broke her heart ten years ago, Jessica would have cheerfully murdered him herself.

Declan has taken his dad's not-so-reputable company and turned it around, and in the process, he's attracted the attention of some vicious killers. The only perk is being reunited with Jessica, who Declan still wants so much he can barely see straight. But Jessica has a plan of her own. She'll protect Declan. She'll have unbelievably hot sex with him.  And when the job is finished, she'll move on. Except that this time, Declan isn't so willing to walk away...

REVIEW:

*I was given an e-copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Plot- I found the plot of this book to be really interesting and captivating. Although this is the third book in a series (which I didn't realise until after reading it), it's one of those series where each book also works as a standalone. You don't need to have read the other two books to understand the story- the reason it can class as a series is that some of the characters overlap into each story, kind of like Anna and the French Kiss if you've read that. One of the things I hate the most in romance books is insta-love, and this was the complete opposite of that which I found refreshing to read. Second chance romances are always cute and I wasn't disappointed by this one at all. I loved the reversal of stereotypical roles too, with Jess being Declan's bodyguard and protector. The story was dangerous, keeping us on the edge of our seats wanting to find out what happens and also incredibly sexy (there is A LOT of mature content in this book so if that's not something you like, I would recommend staying away from this one.)

Characters- I cannot rate the characters in this story enough. They were all so witty and I adore sarcastic characters, I feel like they not only add the humour to the book but are so realistic and relatable.  I was routing for the couple the whole time to realise their feelings and stop pushing each other away because they were adorable together. Declan was just pure sexy and I wish he was a real person.  The character development in this story, especially with Declan was insane. I loved watching Jess break down his barriers and see them become closer and more open with each other and themselves. Jess was clearly broken at the beginning of the story, she was distant with everyone and didn't give anybody the chance to get close to her but as the story went on, you could see her too becoming less closed and it was lovely. I didn't feel we got to see enough of the best friends though which would be my only critique but that's probably because their characters are explained deeper in the other books.

Writing- This was my first Nina Croft story but it definitely won't be my last! I loved her ability to write in a unique way and get both POV's across despite not being written in first person. She wrote the mature content in a way which was not too over done but still enough detail to get the story across which I feel is a difficult thing to do as erotic content can be controversial and either done really well or really badly. I can't wait to pick up some more of her work!

Overall- I would definitely recommend this book and Nina's work in general as it was captivating and a great romance story.
