T5W- Book Trends You're Tired Of

Hi guys!

It's Wednesday which means T5W time! If you don't know what this is, it's a weekly post in which you post your top 5's relating to a theme that is chosen for each week. I'll leave a link to the Goodreads page here as that will definitely explain it better than I can!

This weeks theme is: book trends that you're tired of. 
I struggled with this one as there aren't that many tropes/trends that I dislike but I managed to come up with them so here they are!

1. The Love Triangle

In pretty much every contemporary/romance novel ever, there is a love triangle. Usually this triangle consists of two guys competing for a girl's love, and her not knowing who to choose. Although the person she ends up being with is almost always predicted from like 20 pages in. It's just so unoriginal.

Examples: Twilight, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, Throne Of Glass, The Hunger Games, The Selection (do I need to go on??)


2. Insta-love

I absolutely HATE when characters fall in love within a day of meeting. I've read a lot of books in which the main characters decide they fully love each other like 20 pages in and it's my biggest hate. It's so unrealistic and stupid. I understand you can see someone and think they're good looking and you get a connection/chemistry when you look at each other. That's fine. But to think you're "in love" and would want to spend the rest of your life with someone YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW annoys me so much. I could rant about this for ages but I won't.

Examples: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, Twilight, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Shatter Me, Fifty Shades of Grey


3. Shit parents

There are soooo many books I've read where the parents are absent, or alcoholics, or just plain don't care about their children. Now I'm not going to sit here and say that's unrealistic, because of course there are many families where this is the case and it's so sad. But it doesn't need to happen in every single book ever, like can't you just write about a family that love and support each other for a change?

Examples: Anna and the French Kiss, Carry On, Forgive Me Leonard Peacock, Amy and Roger's Epic Detour


4. An isolated city

This one is pretty self explanatory. A city, that is isolated either by a big wall or seas and nobody is allowed to venture out of this city because it may contain danger and it's unknown and scary. Yet in most of these cities, there is danger anyway! It's just stupid and when it first happened it was probably a very original, cool idea but now it just happens in every single dystopian novel ever and it's boring and cliche. 

Examples: The Maze Runner, Divergent, Under the Never Sky, Gone, The Selection


5. Kids understand more than adults

Lastly, there are always situations that children have to deal with because adults 'wouldn't understand them.' Sure, there are things that adults would struggle to believe but there is no way in real life that a couple of kids would be able to 'defeat murderers' and find their way round unknown worlds and still get back in time for tea. It's so unrealistic and over-used now. Obviously in children's books this is totally fine, it gives them imagination and fun but with YA books it's a little annoying.

Examples: The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew
